Windows Updates Affecting Older POS Terminals
On April 8th 2014, Microsoft dropped support for it's Windows XP operating system. POS Ready 2009 Embedded, which was based on XP, was originally released in 2009, and extended support will end on April 9, 2019. Idealpos 7 is no longer supported on any Windows XP machines, however we will support Windows Embedded POS Ready 2009 up to the end of 2018.
Microsoft released a PCI compliance patch for webservers, which affected our licencing server as these need to be kept up to date. This will also affect many integrations from other third-party providers outside of our control that work with Idealpos. In this particular case, RSA with RC4 and RSA with 3DES were removed from the available ciphers leaving older systems without any ability to securely communicate with the server.
With all Windows security updates, POSREADY 2009 machines have the TLS_RSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA and TLS_RSA_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA ciphers and are therefore capable of secure communication, however Windows XP is no longer supported by Microsoft and does not have security updates available.
POS Ready 2009 will work if the current updates have been applied. If Automatic Updates is turned off, go to Windows Security Center and turn it on.
Below is a link to the Microsoft Website explaining what updates were applied:
